History

“The purpose of my work was never to destroy, but always to create, to construct bridges, because we must live in a hope that humankind will draw together and that the better we undestand each other the easier this will become”

Alphonse Mucha

The great artist, decorator and graphic, Alphonse Mucha, inspired us to erect a place in his memory where everyone could feel the beauty, inner harmony and closure.

The mystery of the hotel is related to Mucha’s biography and his love affair with Ms Elena Darmostukova, who resided in the house, that used to be on this very place before Staro Hotel. Once they met each other at a fair in Paris, genoius artist fell in love with Kiev beauty Elena for the rest of his life.

All his works are remarkable in their own peculiar and unique way. In the centre of a painting there is usually a young Slavic woman in loose clothes, with a shock of thick long hair, that drowns in a sea of flowers. Sometimes she can be languid and mesmerising, sometimes misterious and graceful, sometimes haughty and fatal, but always charming, sweet and of impeccable beauty. Somehow the fair sex brought to immortal life by artist’s brush make an impression as if women are flying high in their minds and know nothing of world’s vanity. This is the memory of artist’s beloved one, and in order to have Elena in his heart forever he painted all the women to resemble her image.

As Mucha’s official biographer was his son, this love affair was kept under seven seals in order to keep a good name of Alphonse and Maruska, parents of the author.

Today we give you a unique opportunity to feel the touch of the power of true love, and fall into embraces of romantic and forever young Art Nouveau style.

Location

Staro hotel is located in the very heart of Kiev – Podil historical district, which is one of the oldest, thus one of the most interesting parts of Kiev for tourists.

Podil is situated at the bottom of Kiev, on the right bank of the Dnieper river. It is a place where the first drug store, the first aqueduct and the first higher education institution appeared in Kiev. In ancient times there were trade and craft centres, and now it is the business part of the city and a true gem for history lovers.

You can really feel the professionalism at the Staro - the staff will go out of their way to help the guests out with any kind of detail from getting a driver, providing power adapters to even having a gallon of special water in the room upon arrival. I also loved the grab-n-go meals that I was given not only on the days that I booked an excursion, but they also gave provided these meals the day I left the hotel for the airport. It was really nice to have a quick meal while waiting to board the plane at 5:00am in the morning. And these are full meals that included things like fruit, sandwich, juice, bottle of still water, cookies, yogurt and even a hard boiled egg! Some other perks to booking your stay at the Staro Hotel: Amazing breakfast!!!!! Within walking distance to Metro Stations. Within walking distance to restaurants, banks and grocery stores. A park is right next door. If you're in the mood to catch a movie, there's a theater right around the block! Stayed August 2016

Gorgeous hotel in Art Nouveau Style. Terrific staff, nice breakfast, and beautiful room. As mentioned, the metro is about a ten minute walk. One metro stop away is the entrance to the funicular up to St. Michael's Monastery, which, in turn, is only 5 or 10 minutes away from St. Sophia. We hope to return to stay here! Located just outside of the historical center, this hotel offered reasonable priced room with excellent sleeping quality. Breakfast was complete, with local specialities. Nothing else to say than that I would not hesitate to return on a next occasion. Stayed August 2016, traveled on business

I stayed in Suite 41 for six days in May for my birthday. It was exactly what I was hoping for. The suite had tons of character, the staff were very friendly, and the breakfasts were excellent. I would stay there again. For my birthday, the staff sent me a bottle of Ukrainian champagne. It was a memorable experience for my 65th birthday! My suite was on the top floor and had a view of a park and beautiful buildings. Great experience. The ladies at the front desk were extremely helpful in seeing that I did all that I wanted and even the doorman was extremely courteous. A great experience. Thank you to all the staff who made it "special!" Room Tip: I would imagine that the rooms on the park side would be better.

My room was very nicely decorated and very comfortable. The restaurant downstairs was also very good! There was even live music while I was eating an early dinner and when the waiter asked me if I had any requests for the jazz pianist, I said he can play anything he wanted since I don't listen to a lot of jazz - I'm more into rock and metal music. The waiter then asked me if he can suggest his favorites. They blew me away by playing some of my favorite rock songs in jazz form! I'll never forget that evening.

I like this hotel - located quite centrally, it's just 7-10 minutes walking distance from the metro station. There are a lot of restaurants and bars around. Staff is friendly, rooms are clean. And I got free upgrade of my room. WiFi is fast, breakfast is tasty (and you can have not only cheese, eggs and sausages, but also a chicken steak, potatoes, etc. And even m&m's 🙂 So I can strongly recommend this hotel. The only disadvantage for me was that there were no Russian channels on TV. Stayed August 2016, traveled on business
